Working with Artworks (Scotland), this launch event on 26 April 2017 aimed to jumpstart the programme series with an engaging, post-work gathering at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow. A total of 35 people registered for the event and 24 people attended the session on the day. The number of attendees includes 5 people who did not register but attended on the day.

The main focus of the workshop was to build a time capsule of current arts practice in Scottish prisons and community groups. Participants brought contributions (i.e. photographs, a report, a piece of artwork, a recording) to contribute to the time capsule. One hour was allocated to discuss the items participants contributed, both informally and as an ensemble, so the entire group could learn of current practice throughout Scotland. Participants also used this time to ask questions about other people’s practice and experiences working in criminal justice settings.

The second part of the workshop asked participants to form small discussion groups in order to discuss the question, ‘The Future of SPAN: What do you want?’ Each group fed back to the larger group before the workshop was concluded. The session was designed to be short, engaging and meaningful. Participants were invited to participate in dialogue throughout the two-hour session and activities took place in multiple areas of the room; participants spent very little time sitting in one place. A mix of informal and formal network opportunities were given to participants in order to meet each other and learn about each other’s work.
