Justice & Arts Scotland are hosting a series of ‘Meet the Artist’ Zoom events over the next few months.

A Practical workshop for Artists. This series will explore socially distant participatory arts in justice and community settings.
About this Event
Rowan Mackenzie, Artistic Director of Shakespeare UnBard, has worked in English prisons since 2017, running workshops and founding theatre companies (The Gallowfield Players – founded 2018 and Emergency Shakespeare – founded 2019). The theatre companies are run entirely collaboratively with each actor having equal ownership, encouraging them to develop positive autonomy, self confidence and transferable skills

In this session, Rowan will be speaking about the formation and facilitation of collaborative theatre companies within the English prison system to enable the actors involved to develop a sense of positive autonomy and personal resilience.

When Covid-19 meant these needed to be suspended she gained permission to continue working collectively, albeit remotely and distanced, beginning a programme of writing which allowed continued communication throughout this

period of isolation for inmates. She widened this out and began to produce activity packs using Shakespeare as a springboard for creativity which have been used across the UK prison estate throughout the lockdown.

During this session she will speak about the theatre companies as well as her Covid response work, with an opportunity for discussion and sharing of ideas.
